We welcome you to St George’s. We are a parish church of
the Church of England, mother church of the Anglican and
Episcopal family of Churches.
Bloomsbury is at the heart of tourist London, yet it is easy to
miss St George’s, surrounded as it is by other buildings. In
recent years, the church has undergone a huge transformation.
The interior has been restored to something like Hawksmoor’s
original scheme. To many it is a surprise; a fine Baroque
interior; English, yet not quite English. It has a remarkable
atmosphere which, we hope, leads easily to prayer.
Over the years, many visitors have joined us in worship on
Sundays and during the week. We welcome everyone. At the
heart of our life together is the Eucharist celebrated on
Sundays at 10.30. Our tradition is high church, loyally
Anglican yet embracing a wider catholicity. The service is
traditional but not stuffy. We enjoy beautiful music and have
high expectations of preaching and teaching. After mass, we
meet together for coffee and, once a month, for lunch.
In recent months, our Sunday congregation has usually
numbered between forty and fifty and this number is
increasing. Our congregation is friendly, supportive and
inclusive. It has a diverse racial and social mix. Young and
old worship together, though as yet there are few children
and teenagers. We would welcome more families with
children. We also welcome students and those new to
London. Our vision is to grow in worship, prayer and
understanding; to offer fellowship, nurture and care; to
provide opportunities for service and witness and to live as
those who seek to address the challenges of modern life
critically, sanely, compassionately and spiritually.
Is this your vision too? If so, accept Philip’s invitation (John’s
Gospel Ch. 1, v. 46) and ours.
Yours faithfully,
Perry Butler,
Rector
